The secret to speeding this is up is to use a video converter to convert your videos to a format significantly smaller in size (without losing quality), before uploading it to YouTube. There are many video converters out there, but I highly recommend a free video converter called MPEG Streamclip. It is very simple to use, available for Mac or PC, and will create a small yet high quality .mp4 YouTube-friendly video file.

Depending on your computer, the video converting process make take a few mins, but is worth the wait. The advantage is that the video convert happens on your computer and is not affected by the speed of quality of your Internet connection and the resulting file is significantly smaller and will take a lot less time to upload to YouTube.

As a bonus, this video converter can also be used to convert between various video file formats (MOV, AVI, MP4, etc) which may come in handy when editing your videos in certain video editing software packages.

    I totally agree that there are many softwares out there for converting video…some free and some paid. MPEGStreamClip works extremely well for the purpose of converting the video file to mp4 format for faster upload to YouTube. Why spend money when you don’t have to :)

    I have been trying to upload a video that is around 6-7 minutes long (file size of 1.98 gb) since this past weekend, if someone was on another computer it kept slowing it down. So today, while noone else was here, I started the upload around 10am. by 730 pm the video was only at 53%. The page accidently got closed and then it was lost.. So now I am going to have to start over again. But first I am going to try to download this software you write about!! Thanks!

    Update: With this software, I was able to upload a lot faster. Total time for each video uploaded (reformatting, and putting on youtube) was less than a hour each, some less than 30 minutes. It also left my videos in the HD that they were filmed in. It did not compromise the film quality at all. thanks again!!

    You’re absolutely right. I tried many free video converters and I’m sure a lot of them will work will, but I found that MPEGStreamClip is one of the easiest to use and works really well.

    [..YouTube..] My camera records videos that are in MTS format. I downloaded your software, tried to make the size smaller but it said Unrecognized file type. PLEASE HELP :(
    I use Panasonic Lumix fz-35 btw.

    [..YouTube..] @hambelr316 Not a problem. You can try using a free software called “MTS to MOV Converter”. You can do a quick google search and find it. They have both a PC an Mac version. Once it is in MOV format, you can use the software in the video to make the file size smaller for faster uploads to YouTube.

    I’m not even kidding for like a 12 minute video it takes over 15 hours and it STILL isn’t done. My connection is NOT slow at all. I use google chrome too..

    [..YouTube..] @skruven47 Sorry for the late response. When exporting to Mpeg4, please check the option for sound and make sure it says MPEG-4 AAC. If you don’t have that option, try downloading the latest version of Quicktime.

    uhhhhh iv been trying to upload my 73Mb mp4 format video file but it just wudnt get uploaded A. it takesss sooo much of timeee and cuz i have power cuts here it get discountinued but yeaaa the power cut happens only in about 4-5 hours gap and even till then it duznt get uploaded wt hell ….n yeaa it waz originally a 230mb file which i later converted to 73mb

    [..YouTube..] @02262011 AVI is supported. I found a tools that converts RMVB to other formats. Give it a try and convert it to MP4 before uploading to YouTube. The link to the software will be in my video description.

    For me to upload from my files a 2 minute 30 second HD video to youtube takes about 4 hrs. 30 min. If I don’t stay with the computer the whole time the computer partially shuts down and I lose the video and have to start over.

    That’s very strange?  How fast is your Internet connection?  Were you uploading/downloading any other files at the same time?

    Sometimes it is good to reboot your Internet router (unplug and re-connect again) once in a while.  That might help speed up your Internet connection in general, especially on YouTube

    [..YouTube..] @NecKClippA It depends on what quality you are outputting your videos. To keep the files small, use the SD (Standard definition) setting. Have you tried converting the output of Sony Vegas to MP4 using the MPEGStreamClip shown in this video? That should make the file smaller without sacrificing the quality. This will make the upload to YouTube faster.

    [..YouTube..] @pokemon555yay Great point. It really depends on how fast your computer is and how fast (or slow) your Internet connection is. I find that converting a video that is a few minutes long doesn’t take very long on my Mac. From my experience, it is still worth converting the file because upload speeds are usually slow.
