This is the 5th of 7 videos on how to avoid the common mistakes people make with online marketing videos. This short video is under 2.5 minutes and reminds you that your video doesn’t have to be perfect in order for it to be effective. The important thing is to communicate clearly with your viewers and deliver your message. This video also teaches you a few inexpensive tips on how to improve the lighting and audio in your videos.
Mistake#5: Trying to Perfect Your Video. Thinking you have to have your videos perfect will result in no videos at all! Reality check…it is NEVER going to be perfect and that’s ok. There is nothing wrong with you making mistakes and correcting yourself in front of the camera. Making mistakes just emphasizes that you are human and people can relate to you better that way.
Also, don’t worry too much about lighting or audio. As long as people can see and hear your message, you’re in good shape. If I were to give one simple lighting tip, it would be to make sure you have one light source, a basic lamp will do, directly to your left and one directly to your right (never behind you). If you would like to improve your audio, I recommend buying an inexpensive lapel (clip on) microphone plus a USB soundcard. Even thought most computers have a microphone input, the sound quality there isn’t the greatest.

That’s a new one for me thanks. You are correct sir good quality Audio is very important. Note the zi8 is the only pocket cam with an external mic input.
But Hani you’re absolutely right, don’t let anything get in your way of shooting and uploading videos.
Thanks Hani.
Hey Andrew…it’s awesome of you to drop in. Actually the newest version of the Creative Vado HD pocket camera (3rd Generation) also has an external mic input which is the key to great audio. My brother just picked one up recently and the next time I see him I will tested out the external mic on that camera and let you guys know how it sounds.
Here is a clip recorded on a Vado HD Generation 3 with an external microphone. It’s quite impressive considering it was filmed outside with a lot of wind!

Make sure you watch the entire video…near the end, the microphone drops and the audio gets slightly worse.
I think one of the keys with the audio and using the lapel mic’s is placement. Keeping it high but not to high. To high and it can sound distorted and no better than before, to low and again no better than before.
Its amazing how a poor picture with great audio can still be acceptable to the viewer.
Would love to get your thoughts on mic placement.
Hey Phil,
Thanks for the awesome feedback and tips on audio. You’re right…audio is more important the the picture. It doesn’t seem logical at first, but people do still watch videos with poor video quality but awesome audio quality. I find that some times I open up a video and just listen to the audio while I surf the web, check my email, etc.
I usually place the lapel mic on my the collar or my shirt or close to my neck. That works well for me because I typically record my videos in my office while I’m sitting down, with very little movement, unless I had too much coffee that morning
Thanks again for the excellent tips and look forward to seeing you again on the blog.
Cheers,
Hani
